Launched in 1947, the K8 was a versatile vehicle used for a wide range of commercial purpose. The factory built ambulance conversion of the K8 was called K8/AA and featured various modifications to make it suitable for transporting patients. For instance, it was fitted with low-pressure tyres, whilst the suspension was altered by using different springs and shock absorber settings. Access to the rear accommodation was either through the nearside side door or via the double doors at the back, where folding steps were fitted. The basic cost of the Austin Welfarer Ambulance was £805 but ambulance services could order various combinations of seats and stretchers, depending on their requirements.
